Constellation Energy Classic:
Way Above Par

Some of the world’s top senior golfers met on the greens at Hayfield’s Country Club in Hunt Valley, Md., last October for the second annual Constellation Energy Classic, an event that raises money for Maryland-based charities. This year, the Packard Center was selected as a beneficiary.

“We’re honored that Constellation Energy included us among their favorite charities,” says Packard Center Director Jeff Rothstein. Exceeding last year’s inaugural fund-raising goals, this year’s event raised roughly $400,000. The Center receives a quarter of those funds. “The true winners are the charities we support,” says Mayo Shattuck III, chairman, president and CEO of Constellation Energy Group. “We’re proud to welcome the Packard Center as our newest beneficiary.”

Shattuck adds he was most impressed by the Center’s collaborative approach—it’s the only grant-giving ALS

A Polo Shirt Like No Other
When word got out that caddy Bruce Edwards had a favorite shirt, Polo Golf, a subsidiary of the Polo Ralph Lauren Corp., designed an exclusive limited-edition replica and launched a national effort to raise awareness about ALS. Sold exclusively online for $100 each, the shirts benefit the Packard Center and two other ALS research organizations. So far, proceeds to the Center have totaled more than $5,000. research center requiring investigators to work together. Under the Packard umbrella, more than 30 of the world’s leading scientists from Hopkins, other universities and biotech companies are pursuing effective treatments and a cure for ALS.

This year’s Champions Tour featured such greats as Wayne Levi—this year’s winner—Tom Kite, Jim Thorpe, Larry Nelson, Peter Jacobsen and Tom Watson. Watson’s caddy, Bruce Edwards, died of ALS earlier this year, making the Packard Center’s gift especially meaningful. Baltimore Orioles legend Cal Ripken Jr. once again served as the event’s honorary chairman.

Plans are already under way for the 2005 PGA Tour Constellation Energy Classic, set for Sept. 12-18. For volunteer opportunities, visit www.pjp.com/cec.html.
