Playing to Win For Life Foundation's First
Annual Benefit Gala

The first annual Playing to Win
For Life Gala was a festive evening and a tremendous success. The
Hyatt Regency Chicago sparkled with good cheer and hope as friends and
supporters of the Playing to Win For Life Foundation gathered to enjoy
the evening's entertainment, featuring comedienne Kathleen Madigan.
Amidst the convivial atmosphere and humor, there were poignant moments
as well. Emily Basten, daughter of Gala chairman Bob Basten, made some
remarks to the audience:
"…Next year I'll be a junior in high school, and I'm not sure
what I want exactly, but I do know what I don't want. I don't want to
be in a wheelchair, I don't want to need someone to put on my shoes for
me, and I don’t want to be powerless to help myself.
"When I grow up I want my daughter not to have to worry about anyone
she loves getting this horrible disease. I want my daughter not to have
to live with ALS in her life. I want for her what I want for myself."
Dr. Jeff Rothstein of the Packard Center for ALS Research was the recipient
of the first Playing to Win for Life Scientific Award. Proceeds from this
event will fund ALS research through the Packard Center and Northwestern
University's Feinberg School of Medicine.
