Dawley Does It Again
May 23, 2005

You may remember Mike Dawley. He’s the young man from Morgantown, West Virginia who organized the “Just Cure It” network to support ALS research. Shortly after being diagnosed with ALS in the spring of 2000, Dawley—aided by friends and family— coordinated a series of marathons that raised more than $60,000 for Packard Center research. And now he can boast having raised another $10,000 for the Center.

At the May 7 Indianapolis 500 Festival Mini-Marathon, Dawley arrived—along with his Just Cure It team of 15—eager to meet up with his old high school friends (Dawley grew up in Indianapolis, and his parents still live there). Determined

to race despite his limitations, Dawley finished in about three and a half hours. He credited family and friends for giving him the strength to pull it off. Dawley also used the opportunity to reiterate that, for him, ALS is not a death sentence. “I decided I was going to live with ALS, not die from it,” he said. “It’s just my nature and my personality. I have a lot to live for.”

Dawley still works full time as a purchasing manager for a West Virginia-based chemical plant. He also runs and coaches athletic events. He lives with his wife, Ginger, and children: 8-year-old Emily and 7-year-old Paul.
